Imagine a small, incredibly strong hammock at the very bottom of your torso. This hammock holds up all your vital organs—your bladder, your bowel, and (for women) the uterus. This is your Pelvic Floor. Because it’s hidden, we often forget it exists until something goes wrong. It is perhaps the most misunderstood and neglected part of the human body.

When this hammock gets too loose, you might experience “leaks” when you cough, sneeze, or jump. When it gets too tight, it can cause mystery lower back pain, hip stiffness, or even a feeling of constant bloating. This isn’t just a “women’s health” topic; men have a pelvic floor too, and it’s often the secret culprit behind chronic groin or hip issues. Most people think pelvic health is only for women after childbirth. This is a myth.

In my clinic, we treat the pelvic floor as the Foundation of the Core. If your foundation is weak, the rest of your “house”—your spine and your posture—will eventually show cracks. Learning to coordinate your breath with your pelvic floor can fix issues you’ve struggled with for years. It’s about learning to “contract” when you lift something heavy and, more importantly, learning to “relax” completely when you’re resting. When this foundation is strong and flexible, everything else—your posture, your breathing, and even your athletic performance—improves. It is the silent engine of your body.

Simple Fix: Check your jaw. There is a direct neural link between your jaw and your pelvic floor. If you are clenching your teeth, your “hammock” is likely clenched too. Relax your mouth, and you’ll feel the tension release in your lower belly.
